Season two of Arrested Development premiered in November of 2004, and not only is it my favorite season of this fantastic show, it's my favorite season of any show I've ever watched! I already explained the premise and general details of the show in The Ultimate Guide to Season One of Arrested Development, but to refresh your memory, the show was created by Mitchell Hurwitz and stars Ron Howard (Narrator), Jason Bateman (Michael), Will Arnett (Gob), Portia De Rossi (Lindsay), Tony Hale (Buster), David Cross (Tobias), Jeffrey Tambor (George Sr.and Oscar), Jessica Walter (Lucille), Michael Cera (George Michael), and Alia Shawkat (Maeby). A new member of the Bluth family is introduced near the end of this season: Franklin Delano Bluth, a racist African-American puppet, who Gob plans to use in a ventriloquism act. Season two of Arrested Development included eighteen brilliant episodes, and here is a breakdown of what happened in each one.

“The One Where Michael Leaves”: Michael decides that he and George Michael will move to Arizona, but is unable to make the move because of unexpected circumstances. Michael learns that George Michael is too old to sit on his lap and drive. Gob is running the Bluth Company, and Lindsay and Tobias try having an open marriage. Oscar moves in with Lucille and Buster. Lucille signs Buster up for the Army when confronted by a Michael Moore look-alike.
Memorable quote: “I've got the thingie. Half in English, half in…squibbly.”-Gob

“The One Where They Build a House”: Gob and Michael argue over who should cut the ribbon at the groundbreaking of the newest Bluth Company model home. Buster suspects that Lucille is having an affair with Oscar. Lindsay decides to bring a homeless man she met outside of a bar as her date to the ribbon cutting, unaware that the homeless man is actually actor Thomas Jane researching a role. George Sr. is mistaken for Oscar and arrested on drug charges in Mexico. Tobias has an unfortunate incident with some expensive diamond cream.
Memorable quote: “I heard zoo noises”-Buster

“Amigos!”: Michael wants to take George Michael to Legoland, but must change his plans when Gene Parmesan (Martin Mull), a private investigator Lucille hired years ago to see if George Sr. was cheating on her, tells Michael that the stair car has been spotted in Mexico. Gob overhears this conversation and thinks that Michael is planning to flee the country, leaving Gob to run the Bluth Company by himself, so he hires Ice (Malik Yoba), a bounty hunter, to keep tabs on Michael. Lucille throws a going-away party for Buster, who tries to get out of Army duty by escaping to Mexico in the trunk of Michael's car. Michael leaves something very important to George Michael in Mexico.
Memorable quote: “Make love in your own hand, Mother!”-Buster

“Good Grief”: Annoyed by Michael interfering in their relationship, Ann (Mae Whitman) breaks up with George Michael. Ice tells the family that George Sr. was killed in Mexico and has already been buried there. Gob agrees to take George Sr.'s place and be buried alive, so the family can have a proper funeral, after which Gob hopes to escape from the coffin and make the cover of Poof magazine. George Michael discovers that all is not as it seems when it comes to George Sr.'s death, and Ann decides to give her relationship with George Michael another chance after Michael invites her to George Sr.'s wake.
Memorable quote: “It's as Ann as the nose on Plain's face.”-Michael

“Sad Sack”: Lindsay becomes attracted to Maeby's crush, Steve Holt (Justin Grant Wade), so Maeby tells Steve that Lindsay is really a man. Wayne Jarvis (John Michael Higgins) comes back into the Bluth's lives: as the prosecutor in George Sr.'s case. George Michael makes a B- on a math test; his excuse for not making an A is that he studied with Ann and got distracted by her prettiness, so Michael decides that George Michael needs glasses. Buster is having trouble at Army training and wants Gob to motivate him. George Sr., who has been hiding in the attic, tries to find out if Lucille is in love with Oscar.
Memorable quote: “If he's got a shot with her, just give me a little tap on the fanny.”-Barry Zuckerkorn

“Afternoon Delight”: On the day of the company Christmas party, Gob alienates the Bluth Company employees by bragging about his expensive suit and warning them against flirting with Lindsay. Michael is upset because George Michael wants to go to a Christmas party at Ann's house instead of the Bluth Company party, and Lindsay doesn't want Maeby to go to the party because she thinks it'll be harder for her to meet men if her daughter is around. Michael and Maeby rebuild the banana stand, which has been vandalized as it is every year around Christmas, and decide to go to the Christmas party together; they end up doing karaoke that is not appropriate for a man to be singing with his teenage niece.
Memorable quote: “These are my awards, Mother, from Army. The seal is for marksmanship, and the gorilla is for sand-racing.”-Buster

“Switch Hitter”: Gob is hired by Stan Sitwell (Ed Begley Jr.), the president of a rival real estate company, but George Sr. thinks Sitwell only hired him because it's almost time for the annual Bluth Company/Sitwell Housing softball game, and Sitwell wants to steal the Bluth Company's best player for his team. Maeby ends up with a job as a movie studio executive and gets Tobias a job as a security guard.
Memorable quote: “It could be worse. He could want to marry your mother. Oh, I'm sorry, is your family not laughing at that yet?”-Stan Sitwell

“Queen for a Day”: Gob is fired from Sitwell Housing. Barry Zuckerkorn (Henry Winkler) tells Michael that the company stock is unfrozen; Michael tells the rest of the family not to sell their stock because he wants to be able to buy a car that George Michael won't be embarrassed to be seen in. Tobias and Buster go to the Queen Mary, where Buster runs into Lucille Austero (Liza Minnelli) and decides to rekindle his relationship with her; Tobias buys the Queen Mary. Michael introduces Buster to Starla (Mo Collins), the Bluth Company “business model” (who Gob claims he has slept with) and convinces him that he should be with her instead of someone who is so much older than him. Maeby leaves a stack of scripts in the attic, and a bored George Sr. writes notes on them; Maeby thinks that George Michael did this and says she loved his notes. George Michael thinks she is referring to love notes that he had written for her and stashed in the attic.
Memorable quote: “My schedule is as open as my relationship with my wife.”-Tobias

“Burning Love”: Ann talks George Michael into hosting a Christian music-burning party, while Lucille asks Michael to bid on her at a charity bachelorette auction. Lindsay wants to borrow one of Lucille's fur coats for her date with actor Moses Taylor (Rob Corddrey). Michael fills in for George Michael at the frozen banana stand and is approached by Sally Sitwell (Christine Taylor), a woman he had a crush on in high school; he arranges to run into Sally at the country club, and when he tries to pay for lunch, his credit card is declined as a result of George Sr. charging a hot tub for the attic. Tobias tries to raise money to bid on Lindsay at the charity auction by capturing a wolf that has been on the loose (thus receiving reward money), but ends up shooting Lindsay with a tranquillizer gun because he mistakes her for the wolf in her fur coat. George Michael and Ann kiss for the first time.
Memorable quote: “Jesus called, he wants your Thriller album.”-Maeby

“Ready, Aim, Marry Me!”: Michael suspects that Lucille Austero and Stan Sitwell are working on a business deal. Michael calls “Uncle Jack” (Martin Short), a muscular old man who can no longer use his legs, because George Sr. says that he might give them money if they give him something in return; it turns out that Lindsay is what he wants in return, but she is attracted to Dragon (Troy Brenna), the “deaf giant” who carries Jack around. Michael gives Lindsay the spa package he received when he won a date with Sally at the charity auction and tells her that Dragon will be her date, though the date is really will Jack. Buster decides that he wants Lucille Austero back, but discovers that she has been sleeping with Gob and is now interested in another man.
Memorable quote: “She'd love to get at me any way she could. That's why she's been flirting with Gob. She's trying to prove that she's closer to my children then I am, but the joke's on her because she doesn't know how little I care for Gob.”-Lucille

“Out on a Limb”: George Michael's interest in Ann is waning, but he doesn't want to break up with her, so Maeby comes up with a plan to get Ann to break up with George Michael. Gob's wife (Amy Poehler) wants a divorce. The day before Buster is supposed to be shipped out with the Army, he invites Lucille to the beach, where he has hired a photographer to take pictures of them. Michael encounters Maggie Lizer (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) at the courthouse and discovers that she is eight and a half months pregnant; she says the baby is not Michael's, but he doesn't believe her. Michael tells Sally that because Maggie is a liar, he thinks the child might be his, and they end their relationship. Lindsay and Tobias break into Maggie's house to try to get a urine sample to make sure Maggie is really pregnant. Buster decides to go in the ocean and ends up losing a body part.
Memorable quote: “I like not having fun. I like your idea of fun…I mean, our idea of fun. I like not having that.”-George Michael

“Hand to God:” At the hospital, the doctor tells the Bluths that Buster will be “all right;” they are overjoyed until the doctor explains that Buster no longer has a left hand. Buster tells Michael that he should fix things with Maggie, but Maggie tells Michael that the baby really is not his, it's from a sperm donor. Gob thinks that he may have had something to do with Buster losing his hand. Two gay cops (Jerry Minor and Jay Johnston) tell Michael that Maggie is carrying a baby for them.
Memorable quote: “A seal didn't bite your Linus off, did it?”-Buster

“Motherboy XXX”: Lucille doesn't want to take Buster to Motherboy XXX, a dance for mothers and sons, because she is embarrassed by his hook; she asks Michael to go, but he refuses. George Michael wants to go on a Christian retreat with Ann, but Michael tells him to spend time with Buster instead. Maeby pretends to be religious, so she can go on the retreat and miss a day of school. Carl Weathers agrees to give Tobias the role of George Sr. on an episode of Scandalmakers if he will sign a release form giving them permission to do an episode about the Bluths. Lucille forces George Michael to go to Motherboy XXX with her.
Memorable quote: “Wow, I misunderestimated you.”-Wife of Gob

“The Immaculate Election”: After being kicked out by Lindsay, Tobias begins living on the set of Wrench, a TV show that stars Lindsay's one-time date, Moses Taylor. George Michael decides to run for student body president, but Michael, afraid that losing will affect his son's self-esteem, enlists Gob's help in playing dirty. Lucille catches Buster in bed with Lupe (BW Gonzalez), her housekeeper. Tobias disguises himself as Mrs. Featherbottom (who looks very similar to Mrs. Doubtfire) in order to become Lindsay's housekeeper and spend more time with Maeby. George Michael is embarrassed by a video of himself recreating a scene from Star Wars.
Memorable quote: “She's religious. That one gets pregnant, it stays pregnant.”
-Gob

“Sword of Destiny”: Lindsay asks Michael to give Tobias a job. Gob buys the Sword of Destiny for his magic act and tries to convince Michael to register as the magician and Gob as the assistant because Gob has been banned by the Magician's Alliance from performing at the Gothic Castle; Michael refuses, but Buster agrees to do it. Michael attempts to teach George Michael to drive (by having George Michael watch him drive), but instead ends up in the hospital as a result of an excruciating pain in his side. After a show at the Gothic Castle, fellow magician Tony Wonder (Ben Stiller) asks Buster and Gob if they would like to be on a DVD he's putting together, but later tells Buster that Gob doesn't need to be on the DVD because he's just an assistant.
Memorable quote: “If I make this comeback, I'll buy you a hundred George Michaels you can teach to drive!”-Gob

“Meat the Veals”: When Lindsay tells Michael that George Michael wants to give Ann a pre-engagement ring, Michael invites Ann's parents (Alan Tudyk and Ione Skye) to the party, so they will disapprove of their family. Oscar decides to throw Lucille an anniversary party. George Sr. overhears Oscar's plan and decides to renew his vows with Lucille; he asks for Gob's help, so Gob puts ether on the lips of Franklin and has the puppet kiss an unsuspecting Lucille, knocking her out. Ann's mother finds herself becoming attracted to Michael.
Memorable quote: “Franklin said some things Whitey just wasn't ready to hear.”
-Gob

“Spring Breakout”: After Lucille jeopardizes a business deal by showing up to a meeting drunk, Michael asks her to go on a spa weekend with him and instead checks her into rehab. Tired of women being objectified by the Girls With Low Self-Esteem videos, Lindsay decides to objectify men, with Tobias' help; in the process, they discover that Phillip Litt (Zach Braff), the man behind Girls With Low Self-Esteem, is a never nude, just like Tobias. After watching Scandalmakers, Kitty (Judy Greer) figures out that George Sr. is hiding in the attic and kidnaps him.
Memorable quote: “They're not even eating these. They just like saying 'bananas and nuts.' I won't tell you why-that's your father's job.”-George Michael

“The Righteous Brothers”: Tobias quits his job as Michael's assistant, but is upset when Michael says wasn't aware Tobias worked there; it seems that the job has been stressing Tobias out so much that he has developed an eating order. Gob gives Michael a CD of him singing with Franklin, and Michael, who hasn't listened to it, tells Gob that he loves the CD. Kitty pays Michael a visit and promises to leave the family alone; Michael decides to keep her occupied by having Tobias spend the day with her. Buster learns some startling news about the identity of his father.
Memorable quote: “Look at us, crying like a couple of girls…”-Gob

My First Memory of Kite Flying: Lets Go Fly a Kite!

Many people get wrapped around the axle when it comes to the fly fishing knots they use. I find that it makes the most sense to pick a few knots and stick with them. There will always be a need for a knot to connect backing to spool or backing to fly line, but the knots used most often are always in the last few feet of a rig. You may be interested to know that the same knots I use when I fish for trout in the Colorado, I also use to fish for giant tarpon in Florida. Here, I will discuss and provide links to learn more about the four fly fishing knots I use most often.

Clinch Knot

The Clinch Knot is the most useful knot I know. I trust this knot for every kind of fish I catch. The Clinch Knot is very easy to tie and can be made with all types of line. When I fly fish for trout, every fly I use is connected with a Clinch. In the Lower Keys, I connect Night Flies for giant tarpon and crafty bonefish flies to my rig with Clinch Knots. This knot rarely fails when tied correctly, it's only real sabotage is improper tightening. The Clinch Knot is slim, finishes neat, and is easy to master.

Non-Slip Mono Loop

Contrary to its name, this knot can be tied with fluorocarbon. The Non-Slip Mono Loop is the one loop knot I use in both freshwater and saltwater. Loops to tarpon flies and trout streamers are how I use the Non-Slip Mono Loop. This loop is easy to dress and can be tied in just about any clear line. I usually wet this knot before I tighten it, but I don't perceive too many ways to compromise it. The Non-Slip Mono Loop can be made to any size and is my only Loop Knot for connecting tippet-to-fly.

Blood Knot

The Blood Knot is not only the way I connect my clear lines together, but also the way I fish a dropper fly for trout. I have found this knot strong in the face of every fish I catch. I like the way it looks and handles in my rig. The Blood Knot can be trimmed flush and still maintain integrity. Though it takes a little practice to tie this knot correctly with ease, I use this line-to-line connection every day I fish. I like the advantage of less visibility using this knot in my tarpon leaders and the second dry fly that I can add to the tag of a Blood Knot at the end of my trout rig. The Blood Knot is a slim, stealthy knot with many advantages when connecting one line to another.

Nail Knot

I have tried many ways to connect my leader to my fly line. The best way I know to make this connection is with a Nail Knot. The Nail Knot is a slim knot that glides through a fly rod with ease compared to other leader-to-fly line connections. The main reason I use this knot is because it is so compact. When your connection will be used in high tension situations it is best to tie this knot and test it fully. I have had learned that this knot may fail a few times when tested at the bench, but if it tests strong on the bench, it will not fail in the field. Usually, a few more turns in the knot will get it to hold, so that you can trim the tag to a minimum. I carry a small Nail Knot Tool around my neck every day. Some people like to glue this knot, but I have found that being able to tie it without glue makes it the most valuable leader-to-fly line connection in the field.

Whether you are dating, recently married or have been married for quite some time, you want to ensure that your lady has a wonderful Valentines Day. The following five tips will give you some great ideas for helping to make the day one she will cherish for years to come.

Tip Number One: Create a very special night out for her. Warn her ahead of time that you would like her to dress up formally for the evening and tell her what time you would like her to be ready, but don't tell her where you will be going or what you will be doing. When the time arrives, take her to a restaurant that you have secured reservations for. Make sure you choose a place you think she will enjoy. If you live in an area where there are not a lot of restaurants and you have been to all of them, you may want to adventure beyond the norm and go to a nearby city for dinner. Just make sure to do your homework and find one that has a wonderful reputation. After dinner, take her to an event you have pre-purchased tickets for, such as a symphony, orchestra, play, author reading, etc., or take her out for a night of formal dancing. If you feel like going all out, rent a limousine for the evening.

Tip Number Two: Jewelry. This gift is a traditional fare of the holiday but instead of going classic with a diamond or gold, why not get her something unique such as an item that features hers and if you are married with children, the birthstones of all immediate family members on it. Or perhaps you could get her a piece of jewelry that has the names of each member in the family written in gold or diamonds. This option is great regardless of her age. If she is young, you may want to have a bracelet created with custom charms on it. If you are married and have children, why not create a ring or necklace with the family birthstones on it for her. You can even have it on diamond cut if you still want a piece of holiday tradition, or have them placed on a high quality gold heart pendant. If your lady is a grandmother, you can have the grandchildren's birthstones added as well. If the lady of your life is not much into jewelry, why not have a watch made with the names of your children etched in gold on it. You can have the names written in print style or in cursive and they really turn out quite lovely. With any of these options you can be as creative as you would like.

Tip Number Three: Inscribe. This tip is limitless in what it allows you to do. You can choose to inscribe something simple and darling; such as a snow globe with your names and the year on it, something more elegant and festive; such as fine crystal wine goblets with your names, the holiday and year etched on them, or something business oriented; such as a fine pen/pencil set. For the college student, teacher or professor in your life, why not have a fine leather tote or briefcase made up with a fine inscription on it. The ideas are endless but show you have put a good deal of thought, consideration and caring into the gift you are giving.

Tip Number Four: Time. Purchase a gift for your gal that will allow the two of you to spend future time together. There are many examples for this. For example, you can perhaps purchase a dual membership to the gym, scuba-diving lessons together, dancing lessons to your liking (ballroom, hip-hop, etc.), horse-riding lessons you will take together, or even something as radical and adventurous as skydiving lessons. Just make sure the gift is catered to something you know she will enjoy.

Tip Number Five. A romantic getaway. If you live in the city why not take her to a country getaway spot. Conversely, if you live in the country, why not take her to the city for a romantic getaway. With the weather in most parts of the nation still a bit crispy in February, finding a romantic place with a beautiful fireplace, wonderful food and a great change of scenery could just be the perfect Valentines Day gift for her. If you choose this option, be sure she has the time off to go (no prior work, school or personal commitments) and be certain to cater it to what you think she will enjoy. This trip can be for just an afternoon, for an entire day and night, or a several day rendezvous (ski resort, anyone?).

Regardless of which option you choose, or if these ideas just help you to come up with some great ones of your own, making Valentines Day special for your lady can be not only romantic, but fun as well and the best part of it all is that your thoughtfulness will be the most enduring part of all.

If you can remember the classic games like Frogger or Tetris than you may want to check out these new Pocket Game Systems. No, these are not the popular or the high price Nintendo gaming system. These new game systems are Tablet and Caplet.

Yes, they are hand held. What is great about them is that one can take them on the go and have a lot of choices of the once popular games or clones of popular games. You can even buy optional accessories for both the Tablet and the Caplet such as optional audio/video cables to connect the gaming machines to a television. You can even buy starter kits for about ten dollars which includes a carrying case, lanyard, screen cleaner and a protector.

The Tablet sells for about $29.99. It is round in size and features a bright 2 inch TFT LCD screen. The tablet houses 25 games, including Frogger. Frogger is an arcade classic that challenges the player to navigate a frog across a highway and a river.

The Tablet also includes some clone or knock off games of some favorites such as Lord of the Jewels. This game is a knockoff of the beloved game Tetris, with a new twist. In Lord of the Jewels you can swap the colors inside the falling piece to create a three in a row pattern.

Tablet also includes Mutant Hunt which plays a lot like the World War II shooter 1942 and Battle Blocks that is a lot like Arkanoid. In Mutant Hunt you control a pilot who must shoot down the enemy. In Battle Blocks you control a ball and you try to keep it from escaping from your paddle as you destroy colored bricks on the screen.

Then there is the game Billboards Master. This game is a pool simulator game that can be played by one or two players.

Tablet is controlled by directional buttons on the left side of the game machine. On the right side is also two more control buttons, which are larger labeled A and B.

A few quips about Tablet are that it has no headphone settings, you can't save your progress if you need to turn it off, even though it does have a pause button and there are no in game instructions.

You can buy the Tablet in such colors as: lime green, off white or magenta.

Caplet sells for about $39.99. It is similar to Tablet. It has a 7 inch wide screen.

Why is it more expensive than Tablet? One reason is that it hosts 35 games instead of just 25 and it has a headphone jack for private listening.

It features three retro classics: Space Invaders (in which you blast down aliens), Burger Time and Bust a Move (the popular bubble popping game).

Many of the rest of the 32 games are based on 1980's classics, yet they are no name title games. Adventures of Waldo is similar to Mario Brothers in that you must jump on ledges, avoid bugs and collect fruit. Magic Jelly is like Bomberman in which the player plants bombs to destroy the bad men.

Just like with Tablet, you can't save your progress when playing Caplet and it doesn't come with any game instructions.

Caplet comes in blue, gray, orange or red colors.

Neither Caplet nor Tablet comes with rechargeable batteries like Nintendo Gameboy. Caplets and Tablet runs off of three AAA batteries.

Should you buy a Tablet or a Caplet game system for your child? It isn't a bad deal price wise. Either machine may be a good starter system for a child to see how your child will take care of a system. You should help your child learn how to play the games, though since they don't come with instructions.

Another game system to watch out for is the upcoming Disney based gaming machine from VG Pocket called GAMEit. This system will come with preloaded games featuring beloved Disney characters.

Cheyenne, Wyoming, is not just for those who love the rodeo. While tens of thousands of visitors arrive each July to take part in the festivities of Cheyenne Frontier Days, many fabulous historical venues can be enjoyed by travelers throughout the year. This city of over 53,000 residents sits at the southeastern corner of Wyoming. Cheyenne has evolved from the 600 hard drinking and hard partying Hell on Wheels crowd of 1867, when it was founded as a tent city for those building the first Transcontinental Railroad.

Here's a sampling of what to see in Cheyenne when the cowboys aren't in town wrestling steer or being bucked off broncos:

For the railroading enthusiast, the CHEYENNE DEPOT MUSEUM is a must-see. It's here where the history of locomotives and of the brave souls who built the rail networks along the Western Frontier is showcased. The museum is located in the restored Union Pacific Depot Station, which was built in 1886. Several blocks east of The Depot, in Holliday Park, resides the famous, but long-retired, BIG BOY LOCOMOTIVE, the world's largest ever built.

The history and interpretations of being a Wyomingite are elegantly featured at the WYOMING STATE MUSEUM, which includes galleries like “The Wild Bunch”. This gallery focuses on the various species of wildlife that can be found in the state. The “Swamped With Coal” gallery features the geological history of Wyoming and how the state's vast mineral resources have shaped it. The HISTORIC GOVERNOR'S MANSION served as home to 19 Wyoming governors from 1905-1976, and is now open again to the public after extensive remodeling. Its first floor drawing room offers a great ambiance, highlighted by some very beautiful furniture bought from Chicago in 1937. All three floors of this restored Colonial Revival house display notable antique furniture pieces.

For the Cold War junkie, the WARREN ICBM AND HERITAGE MUSEUM showcases the history of the US Air Force's Intercontinental Ballistic Missile System and of the people who have lived and worked at Warren Air Force Base itself. The base's origins go back to being a military outpost called Fort D.A. Russell, which protected those working on the Transcontinental Railroad from Indian attacks, and was once the largest cavalry post in the United States. At the NELSON MUSEUM OF THE WEST, visitors can feast their eyes on over 3,700 artifacts dealing with cowboys, Native American history, and view a variety of Western art.

For those who want to leave the driving to others, the CHEYENNE STREET RAILWAY TROLLEY offers fully-narrated historical tours of the city, and even conducts Ghost and Christmas Light Tours during the appropriate seasons.

Come to Cheyenne, and witness the history of Wyoming come alive! No cowboy hats required!

Why do raw foodists eat their food raw? Does raw food benefit people's health more than cooked foods? Am I missing any important health benefits from not eating raw foods? Find the answers to these questions, and more.

What is a raw foodist?
A raw foodist is a person who eats 80% or more of their food raw. Most raw foodists do not eat raw animal-based foods because of the possibility of poisoning by harmful bacterial and bacterial toxins1. Therefore, this article focuses upon the vegan (plant-based diet) raw foodist.

Why do they eat raw food?
Raw foods are packed with enzymes, which are special types of proteins that break down the foods we eat into molecules that our bodies are able to absorb, and thus sustain life2,3,4. This process is called digestion. Therefore, without enzymes, we would die. Further, these enzymes are very temperature-sensitive, and thus are destroyed in foods that are cooked, canned, or dried above 106 degrees Fahrenheit4. Most commercial drying occurs above 130 degrees Fahrenheit, which destroys enzymes. Freezing destroys many food enzymes, but not all. The enzymes in seeds and nuts tend to be more resistant to freezing, as evidenced by the fact that a seed can remain frozen in the Winter and sprout in the Spring.

If cooked food has no enzymes, how do we survive on it?
According to the Merck Manual of Medical Information, our liver and pancreas are capable of producing enzymes that break down enzyme-depleted (cooked) foods into substances and particles that make it possible for us to absorb nutrients. This process is not 100% efficient, as evidenced by the sales of medications for heartburn and other symptoms of indigestion. To make things worse, as we age, this process becomes even less efficient, preventing us from absorbing as many nutrients from enzyme-depleted foods (cooked, canned, dried, some frozen) as we did when we were young4,5. Lack of absorption of food nutrients leads to malnutrition. Insufficient nutrition, in turn, leads to a weakened immune system, chonic illnesses such as cancer and other maladies, and thus premature aging6. When our immune system is weakened, we are prone to malignancies and a many other afflictions, according to WellBeyond100.com/cancer.aspx.

Even our skin and the collagen structure beneath it requires nourishment every day6. Otherwise, our skin begins to age, which causes the skin to wrinkle and lose its elasticity, and thus sag from inadequate supporting collagen structure6. This makes people look much older than someone who has had good nutrition. Eating raw, enzyme-rich fruits and vegetables facilitates superior apsorption of nutrients from food1,3,4.

What happens if our food is not digested completely?
If we were unable to digest any foods at all, we would die. As mentioned above, the human body's digestion process is not 100% efficient; thus, we do not digest 100% of everything we eat. Some undigested and partially-digested foods are eliminated from the body as waste, but other incompletely-digested particles do not. And if these particles contain animal-based proteins, then this introduces a whole set of serious ailments for many7. The reason being that many people have a “leaky gut,” according to Dr. John McDougall and many other scientific and medical professionals. This means that the undigested animal-based protein leaks out through a semi-permeable intestinal wall and into the blood stream, per Dr. McDougall. Once this happens, the undigested protein is seen by our immune system as a “foreign protein” which it attacks, causing malignancies and chronic conditions such as lupus, arthritis, diabetes, arteritis, pernicious anemia, MS, myasthenia gravis, Graves', Hashimoto disease, and the list goes on, according to Dr. Colin Campbell in his collection of decades of USDA studies and research regarding worldwide nutrition in his book “The China Study.” According to Drs. McDougall and Campbell, this “foreign protein” condition does not occur with plant-based proteins, only animal-based proteins.

This information allows us to realize that raw foodists eat enzyme-rich plant-based foods (raw vegetables, fruit, nuts, and seeds) in order to greatly enhance digestion, which strengthens the immune system against cancer, arthritis, and a host of other conditions, and also helps to slow down the aging process by supplying the body with abundant nutrients3,4.

What else do enzymes do?
Our bodies use enzymes for numerous critical functions, including cell division, energy, oxygen and CO2 transfer, digestion, regulating hormone production, and many other vital roles, according to Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary and Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara, founder of YH International which provides enzyme-based products worldwide. Thus, in addition to the impaired immune system and premature aging (including gray hair) mentioned above, an insufficient level of enzymes also causes a decrease in hormone production, which affects the entire body, opening us up to a host of new ailments8.

Therefore, one can recapitulate the above information to state that as we age, our bodies produce fewer enzymes for the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, bringing on the ravages of old age and chronic illnesses. Eating an enzyme-rich diet of raw fruits and vegetables helps the aging liver and pancrease by facilitating digestion and thus enhancing absorption of nutrients in the food3,4.

This is why people who eat an abundance of assorted raw vegetables and fruits have incredible immune systems and look so much younger than the rest of us9.

An enzyme-rich diet
Summarizing the above information, it is safe to conclude that plant-based raw foodists consume much higher levels of enzymes in the foods they eat, and thus, have more efficient digestion, resulting in a higher level of nutrition. This provides them with a superior immune systems and slower aging than the average population. Being a raw foodist is simply a lifestyle for many—a way of life that the raw foodist believes is healthier, leading to far greater quality of life and longevity than that of the average population.
